Today I read an interesting article about Timpsons’ the shoe repair company.  I’ve long had respect for the company as they offer to dry clean interview clothes for unemployed people. Today I have an even greater respect for them as there is an article doing the rounds about their recruitment practices and the management style of the company.  However, it set me thinking…

How has your teaching changed to reflect changing recruitment practices?

When I started out in careers ed, we taught how to write a cheque and open a bank account, How to fill in an application form and do a simple CV.  Things have changed a bit since then.  How has your scheme of work changed to reflect the following:-

  • Application forms  are often  online
  •  CVs that are read by computer programs and often rejected for lack of keywords
  • The importance of the social Media CV as part of the hiring process
  • Skype interviews
  • The role of the recruitment consultants in entry level jobs
  • Applicant tracking systems and sharing of data

Even if you are in your 20s, you may well have seen significant changes in recruitment practice since your last interview, is it time to look at your lesson plans again?
