The case for careers learning as a method of improving the progress of pupil premium learners

Monday 8th July 2013

Ofsted have recently issued a whole raft of new accountability measures for which schools will be held accountable. One of those measures has a direct link to careers learning:-

"From September 2013, Ofsted will introduce a sharper focus to the performance and progress of Pupil Premium pupils in their inspections. It is unlikely that a school will be judged 'outstanding' if its disadvantaged pupils are not making good progress.

"This means that all schools will be held to account specifically for the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers."

Before you get busy preparing for a whole raft of 'interventions' to improve English and Maths just take a few minutes to think about a valuable tool for increasing pupil achievement.

The provision of activities to increase career management learning. thus widening engagement as pupils start to see that they are not condemned to be trapped in a cycle of low level jobs or unemployment if they work to ensure they are not. Career learning provides that trigger for improvement across the board.

No, I know it's not a quick fix and probably won't show immediate improvements in the current academic year but it will improve not only your exam results but also your destinations data significantly within the short to medium term of 2-5 years. It will

provide sustainable progress and improvement and provide a valuable platform for developing school/business links which will enable employer engagement on a number of levels. Not just providing work experience or career talks but also providing volunteers to mentor and work with young people.

Whilst i speak from an empirical point of view, there is a huge amount of evidence to back up my assertions. The CBI and Ofsted are highlighting the need for employability skills.
