CEIAG for Headteachers, Governors and SLT

Vital updates for careers folk, Headteachers & Governors

Monday 13th April 2015

It's typical isn't it? Whilst you're away the world goes mad with news that is pertinent to your work. Updates galore and new publications. Well, that's what happened to me over the past couple of weeks. New statutory guidance, Labour guaranteeing face to face guidance and manifestos aplenty. So I thought I'd do a quick update of what is going on as I'm sure many of you were off on your travels or at least chilled out with the family over the Easter holidays. Apologies to those of you still on holiday this week. Ignore me and I'll post a further reminder next Monday when you're back!

Statutory Guidance
This has been updated for both schools and colleges. Tristram Hooley and Dierdre Hughes have both posted very useful synopses both sounding positive about the move forwards, click on names to view.

Labour Education Manifesto
It caused quite a hoo haa when Labour outlined its intent to allocate £50m to provide face to face IAG. Certainly a step forward. However, it should be noted that the money for this would come from the widening participation budget. There was a huge amount of coverage in the media from The Guardian, The Telegraph, The BBC, The Daily Mail and ITV as well as a Labour Party Video

The Foundation Code
The ASCL along with AoC, 157 Group, ATL, AELP, PPC and SFCA has posted a very useful document outlining good practice in careers called The Foundation Code which explores the strategies needed for schools to adopt an approach that addresses the skills mismatch and supports social mobility. One of its major recomendations is to add the organisations voices to the call for an SLT member to have responsibility for CEIAG and for CPD to support development.

NFER Improving Employability Skills, Enriching our Economy
A useufl short document which looks at the need for understanding and cohesion between employers and schools focussed around a 'connect card' a PDF which contains reasons for both schools and SMEs to work in partnership. Schools should, I believe, take heed of one of the main quotes from the main report. Employer engagement is a long term objective.

A key assertion was that relationships need to be driven by schools or colleges and, therefore, require time and commitment, but with long term benefits.

Managing Work Experience
Fair Train & ALEP have published an e guide to managing work experience in KS5 and a very useful H&S guide to work experience

The 157 Group Option Choices Video
Finally a useful little video about choices

I think that's enough to process on your first day back. Have a great summer term all.
